Nothing Special At All
When we practice, we may get the false impression that we are doing something special. We may think, “Oh, I am one with all” or “Look at me doing zen”. That is our ego talking. Our ego is saying “Look at me!” In reality, we are doing nothing special at all. Lao Tzu and Buddha did not do what they did to try to be special. By avoiding trying to be special, they did special things. To put is simply, it was more of a thought process of ‘how can I make my way free of suffering’? Of course I do not know what they were really thinking but I believe it was something along those lines. We should think similarly. Millions of people before us and with us now practice, so what we are doing is not so special. Our goal should be making our path one of peace and least resistance. If we think we are doing something special or that we are special, we are mistaken. The Buddha way is to just do. One flower is no more special than another. They may be different but not special. Just be a seed poking out of the soil and look for the sky. That is good practice, nothing special.
