The Work Is Never Finished

I was out early this morning in the garden re-staking some tomato plants. It was pouring rain and I got pretty wet. I did not mind though. The plants were going to break unless I put bigger stakes in the ground. There were also some weeds to pull. Our practice is like a garden. The work is never finished. In the garden, even though you get the fruits or vegetables out, you still have work to do to get ready for the next harvest. In our practice, there is always work to do too. If you love gardening, it is not really work. If you are one with your practice, it really is not work either. You just go about it and do what needs to be done. The way to that mind is everyday practice. If you have everyday practice, you do not get distracted or find reasons not to practice. It takes practice to have everyday practice. Once you have it though, it becomes like brushing your teeth. You do not even need to think about it, you just do it. I wish there was a magic wand I could wave over you and get you to practice everyday, but there is not. You must acquire everyday practice on your own. Reward yourself from time to time with a little something to keep you consistent with your practice. After a while, the reward will be practicing itself.
