Do Not Be Too Pious

Filed under: Teachings — roshihogan @ 12:06 am

One problem I see with some walkers of the path is a tendency to be overly pious. Do what you can to help all sentient beings, but do not spend time worrying about accidentally stepping on an ant. Worrying about karmic issues of insignificant events only muddies the mind. Those who fret and warn about such events are missing the big picture. It is only a tiny drop in a vast ocean. Becoming too pious about things shows an unhealthy attachment. Yes, we can become attached to Buddhism, Taoism, or whatever ism we are practicing. There are many things that we need to be conscientious about. Micro-managing every tiny event in our lives is the slow boat to nowhere. Stay aware of the big picture. Also, do not be too pious when looking at others. Have you looked in your back yard lately?
