The Pure Mountain Path

One day three new students and a master met by a river. There, he handed each student an important scroll and then departed after telling them to meet him at the temple and deliver the scroll the next day. The next day, the master waited for the three students. After a few hours past sunrise, the first student walked through the gates with the scroll and handed it to the master. “Excellent, well done”, said the master. The master continued to wait for the other two students. After a few days, the master decided to look for the other two students. “Where have you been?” asked the master after finding one of them wandering around in circles. “Did you not follow the instructions I gave you to get to the temple?” The student replied “I started to but I found some delicious berries just off the path. I dropped the scroll though and it took me a while to find it. Later I lost it again and I couldn’t find my way back to the path.” They could not find the third student at all that day although they found the scroll near where he had started his journey. Later he turned up dead in a desert hundreds of miles away. This parallels Tao Te Ching verse 41 which states that there are three kinds of students, superior, common, and inferior. All three start in the same place but their journey takes them to different places. One student is diligent and is successful. Another student means to be diligent, but gets distracted and is not successful. The third student , inferior in nature, figures he has no need for such old wisdom and throws the scroll away. Where will your journey take you?
